I’m thinking about resurrecting some of the old interviews I did with actresses from the now-defunct Julie Meadows YouTube channel. The whole point of interviewing women from the industry was to show their human side. One of the most disappointing realities of that industry were the terrible interviews. “What’s your favorite position?” “What’s your favorite scene?” “Did you enjoy working with [insert letch’s name here]?” All to perpetuate a fantasy in order to drive sales, making fools of us all; actors and fans alike. This ridiculous idea that life is just a debauched string of random, fantastic scenarios for us. The truth is so much more interesting, and none of it was very truthful. I told the truth in interviews all the time, but they’d change the story to fit a different narrative. The one person who was allowed to show up on sets and ask really blunt, rude questions about past trauma – just focusing on actresses, mind you – was just the other side of the same coin. This guy would ask women if they’d been traumatized as children, etc. I’m trying to be safe with my language here. That’s not an interesting question if it’s just for the sake of being as exploitative as the fantasy that said actress is just a gorgeous, insatiable pleasure doll. When shock is the only element you value, you’re just another spoke in the entertainment wheel.
My interviews focused on their hobbies and cares. The interview with Samantha Ryan is one of my favorites because she is such an interesting person. She was a poker player at the time. She played Claire de Lune on her piano. Well-spoken and beautiful on the inside despite any scene she may or may not have enjoyed in her career, and any trauma she may or may not have survived. Sunny Leone is a celebrated actress in India. Stunning to look at, but she carries herself with dignity in everything she does. And Jane Hamilton is literally the best person I have ever met in the industry. A Golden Goddess from a different era. Funny, authentic, animal-loving, spirited. I love that woman so much!
And that’s the reality. Women from that industry are some of the most interesting people I’ve ever met. It was nice to see and share that side of them.
